Girls Hockey: Lakers keep undefeated streak alive at four games
It’s still early in the girls’ hockey season, but the Detroit Lakes squad is already turning the corner with a good start with a 3-3-2 record.
For the second time this season, the Lakers downed Mid-State Conference opponent Park Rapids, this time on DL goalie Veronica Badurek’s first shutout of the season 2-0 Tuesday.
It was the Lakers’ first game since the Thanksgiving break, after weather cancellations last week.
But the rust was not apparent, as DL skated to the win, while outshooting the Panthers (4-6-1) 30-23.
“We knew it was going to be a battle with Park Rapids, especially after beating them in their own rink two weeks ago, so we knew we had to come out aggressively,” said DL head coach Gretchen Norby. “I was happy with the way the girls played after not having played a game since Thanksgiving after the game cancellations last week.”
DL forward Emily Seebold cracked the scoreboard first, converting a Randa Larsen assist into a 1-0 lead 2:50 into the first period.
The insurance goal was solidified by Chandra Johnson on a Seebold assist just 1:12 into the final period.
“I thought we did a good job of controlling the play early on in the game,” Norby said. “We ran into some penalties late in the first and in the second, so I never really felt like we got a good rhythm going having been shorthanded for close to eight minutes in the second.
“Overall, though, the girls played well defensively. The keys for us were to eliminate their opportunities in our defensive end and to take away their time and space with the puck. We won races to the puck and battled hard and played tough in front of our own net.”
The Lakers are in the midst of a four-game undefeated streak and will put that on the line Tuesday, Dec. 17, when they travel to West Fargo for a 7:15 p.m. start.
“Our focus as we move forward is just to continue to improve each and every game,” Norby said. “We need to play consistent hockey as we get farther into the season. Our strength is that we are a hard-working, gritty team.
“We have done a good job of forcing turnovers in the last couple games. If we can improve on capitalizing on those turnovers we will start to put up more numbers on the scoreboard.”
