Girls Tennis: DL pulls out thrilling victory under the lights at Fergus Falls
FERGUS FALLS — The Detroit Lakes girls tennis team picked up their first victory of the season under the lights at Fergus Falls with a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Otters.
"This was one of the most exciting matches I've been a part of," Head Coach Tanner Beauchman said.
Detroit Lakes trailed three matches to one needing a sweep of the final three matches for the win.
Maddie Ring and Adrianna Brehm cut the Otter lead to 3-2 with a big win at three-doubles needing three sets after dropping the first 6-3. The Laker duo took the second set in a 7-6 tiebreak and cruised in the final set dropping only two games to Sadie Christianson and Katie Leitch.
"Once they won, I knew we had a chance."
Devree Bunnis and Carolyn Kinney, DL's top doubles pair, tied the score at three in an easy straight set victory over Emma Clark and Abby MacFarlane.
The deciding match was a battle of both team's best at one-singles and Fergus Falls' Emma Bjerklie had the upper hand early taking a 4-1 lead over DL's Dani Unruh.
Unruh rallied to take the final five games to take the first set 6-4 and closed out the match by winning the second set 6-3.
Given the 7 p.m. start time, Unruh's match ended at 10:30 p.m. in a rare evening finish for the Lakers' first dual victory.
Unruh's win was the only victory for DL in singles play. The Lakers swept all three doubles matches.
Emma Maguire and Emily Seebold won at two-doubles four and three.
"It was an exciting night," said Beauchman.
