Girls Tennis: Lakers lose another close match
The Detroit Lakes girls’ tennis team is just about over the hump of winning the close matches, but the Lakers just are not quite there, yet.
Losing their second 4-3 match in a week, the Lakers are looking to start winning, instead of falling in the close matches in the near future.
DL lost to Fergus Falls 4-3 and Thief River Falls 6-1 in Friday’s triangular, with Thursday’s triangular postponed due to rain and rescheduled to Sept. 11, starting at 9 a.m.
“It is always difficult to lose a close match,” said DL head coach Tanner Beauchman. “It is a good sign we are competitive and hopefully as the year progresses, we are able to win a few close duals.”
Dani Unruh and Emma Maguire each won in singles at No. 1 and 3, respectively, while the doubles team of Devree Bunnis and Carolyn Kinney were also victorious.
“Dani and Emma played excellent matches,” Beauchman said. “They have been working hard at practice and it is good to see the hard work pay off. Devree and Carolyn played the best tennis I have seen them play.”
Unruh picked up the win over Fergus Falls’ Sarah Taylor 6-0, 6-2, while Maguire won over Amanda Nelson 6-4, 6-4.
Bunnis and Kinney downed Madi Neulub and Emma Clark in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Unruh made a sweep of the day with her 7-6, 6-3 win over TRF’s Kaylee Jorgenson.
The Lakers will host Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
