Goals galore reached by Laker girls' golfers; Tschider co-medalist
Everything literally came together for the Detroit Lakes girls' golf team -- and that even includes perfect timing.
Personal and team goals were met and eclipsed during the Mid-State Conference meet Tuesday at the Detroit Country Club, as the Lakers clinched the team title and individual medalist laurels.
The Lakers shot a season-low 338, while reaching the goal set forth before the meet of all six DL girls shooting underneath 100.
Eighth grader Matty Tschider also shot a career-best 81 to share medalist honors with Staples-Motley's Emily Israelson.
It was just a perfect day under some perfect skies.
"I just have goose bumps," said DL coach Cali Harrier, who is subbing for head coach Jen Hendrickson while she's on maternity leave. "We reached our goal of having everyone breaking 100, and also having four post scores in the 80s.
"The girls came into the meet confident, and also playing on their home course helped out."
Joining Tschider in the land of the 80s were sophomore Courtney Hedstrom and eighth graders Trisa Hutchinson and Natalie Roth.
All four earned All-Conference honors, as Hedstrom's 83 placed her third overall, Hutchinson's 85 fourth and Roth -- who beat out three Pequot Lakes' players in a playoff hole to nab the final spot -- shot a career-best 89, her first time breaking the 90 barrier.
Emma Thompson (93) and Ashley Friesen (97) also reached the goal of shooting under 100 as well.
"We just need to embrace this score and enjoy it now," Harrier said. "They all came on strong at the end today, but one of the keys will be to start out well early on in meets and take it one round at a time from here on out."
For Tschider, earning co-medalist accolades also highlights a season which has been producing career-low numbers.
She was able to chip on the fourth green for a birdie, and then made a sand-save for par later in the round.
"That saved the day for me," Tschider said of her sand shot. "My goal today was not to shoot over double-bogey, although I had one triple.
"It's really exciting to win (the team title), too. We are really coming together at the right time," she added.
Hendrickson even was able to enjoy her team's success after following some of the players on the course, along with her new baby boy, Jack.
So all in all, Tuesday's meet will be one to build on for the Lakers, who will play at the Section 8-2A course Friday at Longbow and the Sub-Section course at Wildflower Saturday.
"We are just going to go out and have fun," Tschider concluded.
Tuesday definitely was a good day to do just that.
