Golden Gloves returns to Detroit Lakes
For the first time in over 15 years, Golden Gloves Boxing will be having a fight card in Detroit Lakes.
The last time the Golden Gloves held a card in DL, it was held at the VFW. This time around, the facility is a bit larger and boxing is a bit bigger in the area.
The Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center and the Lakes Area Boxing club will host Golden Gloves boxing Saturday, starting at 7 p.m. inside the DLCCC Fieldhouse.
There will be fighters from DL, Wadena, Fergus Falls, White Earth, Brainerd, St. Cloud and Anoka boxing on the card.
There is a nice local touch to the fights, as six boxers from the DL and Frazee area fighting.
For the main event, Frazee's 18-year-old Corey Burton will face Jeremy Moe of St. Cloud in the heavyweight bout.
There are a total of 15 to 16 fights planned for the night.
Other area fighters on the card include Casey Holt (11 years old), Mike Lucero (15), Gemini Strehlow, Shane Kern (20) and Jessica Bergstrom.
The Lakes Area Boxing club also has a new home. Located east of town near the railroad tracks, the club now has a full room, with enough space for a ring and all of the equipment.
"We were looking for more of a home, and here we have more of a gym than we had at Washington School," said LAB head coach Chris Holt. "We don't have to set up and tear down the equipment. Also, having a ring, our fighters can learn how to fight out of corners. It just has a good boxing atmosphere now."
LAB has 10 regular fighters training on a weekly basis. The club will also train year round now.
"We are looking to set up a boxing event in the summer, possibly outside," Holt added.
As for Holt's professional career -- in which he lost his Minnesota State Middleweight championship in his most recent fight -- it is on hold for now.
"I'm looking to train other guys now and focusing on our amateur boxers," Holt said. "I'm looking to become a personal trainer. But I'm not done fighting (professionally), I'm just taking a vacation from it now."
General admission for the Golden Gloves Boxing event this Saturday is $6 for adults and $4 for youth ages 5-17. Ages four and under are admitted free.
