After enjoying their dual Section 8-2A True Team championships from Tuesday, the Laker athletes who didn’t partake in that meet participated in the Daggett Invite in Frazee Thursday.

“Because of the limits which True Team places on entries, (two per event and only one relay) we have some very talented young ladies that do not get the opportunity to compete at the section true team meet,” said DL head girls’ coach Mike Labine. “The Daggett Invite gives us a chance to get them into a varsity meet and see how their times/distances compare.

“I was very pleased with the way our girls competed at Frazee.”

Several girls have earned a chance to compete at the Mid-State meet next Tuesday in Crosby-Ironton because of their performances yesterday, Labine added.

“There’s also a possibility of competing at Stillwater next Saturday, too,” Labine said.

Veronica Haverkamp had an excellent day, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.88.

Three-time state runner Ellie Bachmann of Frazee was second with a mark of 2:34.95.

DL’s Jenna Field placed in two different events.

“This is Jenna’s first year out for track, and she just keeps getting better every time she competes,” Labine said. “Placing two girls (Erica Nelson and Hannah Okeson) in the 100 meters was really nice to see.”

Mackenzie Foltz ran a good 1,600 meters as well.

“She competed hard and led the race for about 1,500 meters,” Labine said. “I was happy with the girls in the 300 hurdles. All of the girls in that race cut huge chunks of time.

“Overall, it was a really good day for us.”

Frazee’s Cody Nordquist went 12-6 in the pole vault to break the school record, which was held by Forrest Sauer in 2006 and Tyler Steinle in 2007.

Frazee’s Gabriele Grassi won the 100-dash with an 11.93 time, while Holly McCamant was third in the 1,600 run with a 6:06.94.

Laker Alex Webber was second in the 400 dash with a 55.37, while the DL 4x400 girls’ relay team was first with a 4:31.32.

The Lakers will now prepare for the Mid-State Conference meet Tuesday and then travel to Stillwater Saturday to compete in the State True Team meet.
