GRAND FORKS -- In an odd case that garnered much attention, a woman accused of showing pornography on a television that could be seen and heard from a Grand Forks elementary school was ordered Thursday to undergo a chemical-dependency evaluation and serve a year on unsupervised probation.

Nicole Altendorf, 37, pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors: preventing arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct. Two felony charges -- simple assault of an officer and contact by bodily fluids -- were dismissed in a plea deal.

Altendorf, of Grand Forks, has a suspended month-long jail sentence hanging over her. If she stays out of trouble for a year, her convictions will be wiped from her record.

She was arrested Oct. 16 at a house near Lake Agassiz Elementary School. A police affidavit says she resisted arrest, bit the arm of an officer, kicked him in the crotch several times and spit in his face. School employees reported that the television playing pornography was in front of a window in the home; the windows and a door of the home were open, and the volume was turned up on the TV, the affidavit states.

Altendorf's attorney had sought to change the venue of a possible trial, arguing that the sensational allegations made it unlikely an impartial jury could be found in Grand Forks County. The prosecution opposed the move, and a judge tabled the issue until jury selection.
