Grand slam dooms Angels to first loss of season
A grand slam in the bottom of the third inning by Pelican Rapids paced them to a 15-5 victory over visiting Detroit Lakes Sunday in a Countryside vs. Hi-10 showdown.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Lakers scored six runs to erase a 4-1 deficit, with the big blow being a grand slam homer by Ryan Boyer.
The Angels scored in the top of the first as Chris Gilson started the game with a walk and later scored on a two-out single by Doug Dickey.
DL added two runs in the second inning, as Gilson walked with two-outs, with Kirchner tripling. From third base, Kirchner scored on a throw from the catcher which went over the third baseman’s head.
The Lakers cut the score to 3-1 in the bottom of the second as Ivan Nodsle scored on a single by Boyer.
In the top of the third, Dickey singled to start the inning and scored on a two-out Ryan Berg single to put the Angels up 4-1.
In the top of the fourth, Kirchner singled with one out and later scored when Reed Oistad was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Gilson took the loss as he went the first three innings, Trevor Tappe went two and Mark Gulseth pitched the seventh.
The Lakers banged out 16 hits, while the Angels had seven.
Alex Johnson pitched for the win with six innings of work, with Adam Johnson pitching the seventh. Boyer made two diving catches in centerfield, which robbed the Angels of runs both times.
Boyer also finished with five RBIs.
The Angels (1-1) will travel to Perham Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. start.
