Great Clips opens in DL
The owners of the new Great Clips salon in Detroit Lakes are no strangers to the Minneapolis-based chain -- it's their ninth Great Clips location.
Emily Wilcox of Fargo and Cary Schilling of Minneapolis are the owners.
"My business partner, Cary, started his first Great Clips in Grand Forks in 1992," Wilcox said. "And we've expanded so we have two locations in Grand Forks, five in Fargo-Moorhead and one in Bismarck -- that's where Cary is from."
The Great Clips in Detroit Lakes opened Nov. 16 and is located in the Downtown Crossing, at 135 Veterans Memorial Parkway.
The manager of the Detroit Lakes salon is Nana Jensen, who lives in Hawley and previously managed a Great Clips for Schilling and Wilcox in north Fargo.
"So it's a natural fit for her to work in Detroit Lakes," Wilcox said.
There are a half-dozen or so stylist chairs at the new Great Clips and six employees, a mix of full-timers and part-timers, Wilcox said.
"We're on a walk-in basis," for haircuts, but appointments are needed for perms, she added.
A feature on the Great Clips website allows customers to check in online and to see how long the wait is for a haircut.
"The system automatically calculates our wait time, based on point-of-sale information," she said.
A free app is available to allow mobile phone users to accomplish the same thing.
Haircuts are $13 for adults and $11 for kids 10 and under and seniors 65 and older.
Great Clips does not do hair coloring, but does do some styling.
"Our primary focus is on haircuts," Wilcox said. "We do a lot of male clients and families and kids-- we're kind of all over the board with our customer base."
Great Clips is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
"We're very excited to be in Detroit Lakes and to be part of the community and to participate in the community," Wilcox said.
