The Guess Who, the first international rock music superstars from Canada, began playing locally in 1962 in Winnipeg.
The band was formed by lead singer and guitarist Chad Allan and was originally known as Al and the Silvertones.
Since then, the group's name has evolved. It was known as Chad Allan and The Reflections, named similar to their musical influence, The Shadows, and later became Chad Allan and The Expressions.
In 1965, they scored their first hit, which was a rendition of Johnny Kid & The Pirates' "Shakin' All Over."
Quality Records credited the single only to "Guess Who?" and hoped that some listeners might assume the "Guess Who?" identity was deliberately masking several famous performers working under a pseudonym.
However, even after Quality Records revealed the band was actually named Chad Allan & The Expressions, disc jockeys still announced the group as the Guess Who, forcing the band to rename once again, to The Guess Who.
In the early 1970s, they became the first Canadian rock band to reach #1 in the United States with their hit song, "American Woman."
To-date, The Guess Who has recorded 14 Top 40 hits, including "Shakin' All Over," "These Eyes," "No Time," "Undun," "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature," and "Share The Land."
In 1987, the band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
The Guess Who's popularity has increased tremendously through the years due to the strength and reputation of their live performances and they remain one of today's top touring rock bands.
