Gunnar Helland

Gunnar Helland, 102, died Monday, July 13, 2009, in the Frazee Care Center.

Gunnar Helland was born March 18, 1907, in Aalgaard, Norway, to Inga and Nils Helland. He gradu-ated from school in Norway and attended the Hall of Mechanics there before immigrating to the United States in 1930. He first worked at a ranch in Mon-tana before moving to the Detroit Lakes area.

On June 4, 1938, Gunnar married Mamie Martinson, and they made their home on a farm near Richwood, where they raised their two children. As a young man, Gunnar was well known in the area for his sheep-shearing talent, which kept him very busy in the spring. In addition to farming, Gunnar worked in con-struction. Mamie passed away on Feb. 15, 1968.

Gunnar married Irene Cusey on Aug. 24, 1984, at the Methodist Church in Detroit Lakes. He moved to Detroit Lakes at that time. Gunnar's chief enjoyments included dancing, flea marketing, gardening and being needed by others. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his family and friends, and playing with his great-grandchildren.

Gunnar's life, love and sense of humor will be missed by his family.

Surviving Gunnar are his son, Marcelyn (Kath-leen) Helland; a daughter, Glenice (Jon) Hall; a stepson, David (Becky) Cusey; a stepdaughter, Kareen (Bob) Pfeifer; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; as well as a few nieces and a nephew.

Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers; one sister; his first wife of 29 years, Mamie; and his second wife of 15 years, Irene.

A service of celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 17, in the Richwood Lutheran Church.
