Gymnasts go west for second victory of season
The Detroit Lakes gymnastics team traveled a long way to win its second meet of the season by taking the Tri-State Invite in Jamestown, N.D.
The Lakers notched a season-high 140.9 points to top both Jamestown and Aberdeen, S.D., which finished with marks of 139.7 and 126, respectively.
"Our score improved, but the team agreed that there is still room for improvement," said DL head coach Jenny Whipple.
The return of senior Courtney Einerson -- who missed the first two meets of the season -- was a big help in upping DL's score.
Jessica Stelter remained as solid as can be, winning the all-around title with a score of 36.25, while taking first in both the vault (9.3) and floor (9.0). She also was second on bars (9.0) and third on beam (9.0).
"Our vault went very well," Whipple said. "Jess had an amazing vault."
The Lakers are still looking to clean up their beam routines, while Amy Crawford stuck her first aerial in the event to finish with a score of 8.85, third behind Stelter.
Einerson finished in eighth all-around with a 34.35, while taking fourth on bars with an 8.75.
"Our score was helped with Courtney returning," Whipple said.
The Lakers will have a busy week with three meets scheduled -- Tuesday at home against Bemidji, Thursday at Park Rapids and Friday with Becker inside the Minnesota Flyers facility.
"We'll try and reserve some of the girls' energy and have an easy practice Wednesday," Whipple said.
