Lakes Area Birding Club

LP Garden Club

The Lake Park Garden Club meets at 1 p.m. in the Jane Nelson home, 14401 County Road 5. This will be the second planning meeting for 2013 meetings and programs. We encourage prospective members to attend, and we are always interested in suggestions for future projects and/or informative programs.

Facing loss during the

holidays

Season of Sorrow, Season of Joy: Facing Loss During the Holidays is a free and educational presentation that is open to the pubic and will enable attendees to identify and learn how to manage the mixed and painful emotions that can surface when grieving during the holidays. Participants will also learn important self-care strategies. It is from 10 a.m. to noon in David Donehower Funeral Home.

Church event

St. Paul's Loon Lake LWML, Vergas, sponsors a Cookie, Lefsa, Quilt Walk from 9 a.m. to noon. Pick up your favorite holiday treats. There will be a free will offering plus quilts and baby blankets for sale. Serving coffee, apple cider and treats.

Marshmallow Foundation

A holiday open house for the Marshmallow Foundation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Lucky Dog Boarding and Training Center. There will be pictures with Santa ($10 each), raffle prizes, silent auction, vendors, tours of the shelter, face painting ($1), snacks and more.

Christmas brunch

Trinity Lutheran Women host a Christmas brunch at 9:30 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, DL. Karol Bruggeman is speaking on starting the Restorative Justice Program in men's correctional facility in St. Cloud. Pastor Jim Osvold of Lund Lutheran Church will also share music.

Christmas Bake Shoppe

Calvary Lutheran Church, Perham, sponsors the 17th annual Christmas Bake Shoppe from 9-11 a.m. The Cookie Shoppe features boxes of three-dozen fancy cookies for $12, as well as a Snack Shoppe (coffee, tea, hot chocolate and treats).

Santa letters

The Detroit Lakes Women of Today are helping Santa! Visit www.facebook.com/groups/dlwomenoftoday to download and print your form, or pick one up at Central Market, The Washington Square Mall, The Library or The Chamber of Commerce, to get a personalized letter sent to your child. Proceeds benefit local organizations and service projects. Cost is $3 per letter.

Lake Park Community Ed

Lake Park Community Education offers several upcoming classes. Holiday Baking with Anne -- Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 10 in Lake Park High School Consumer Science Room. Cost is $8 plus price of ingredients. Bring a take home container the night of the class.

Scrap-booking with Candi. Classes are Tuesday, Jan. 15, 22, 29, and Feb. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. Fee is $30 for all 4 classes plus cost of supplies paid to Candi.

On going classes: Yoga, Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Fee is $5 per session; Zumba, Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fee is $5 per session.

Miss America send-off

The Miss Northwest Pageant Committee hosts a send-off party on Dec. 9 from 3-5 p.m. in the Historic Holmes Theatre for Miss Minnesota Siri Freeh. She will be performing her talent and presenting her wardrobe for the Miss America competition. Refreshments will be served. Parents Supporting Parents meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. Help and support for those who are struggling with addition among their family or friends. L.A. Moms group

L.A. (Lakes Area) Moms is designed to nurture every mother. At our L.A. Moms group, you will have a chance to socialize with other moms, hear some great teaching, have discussion time and participate in creative activities. L.A. Minnesota TOPS Chapter 30 meets Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church choir room.

TOPS chapter 1251

Birthing class

St. Mary's Innovis Health hosts childbirth preparation classes for expectant mothers in their sixth to seventh month of pregnancy. Topics include Labor & Delivery, Cesarean Birth, Role of the Labor Companion, Newborn Care, Unexpected Outcomes, Breast & Bottle Feeding, Postpartum Period, Breathing Patterns & Relaxation Techniques. Suggested donation is $30 for all five classes. Classes are Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, call (218) 847-0804.

Card making, scrapbook

The DL Senior Citizen Center hosts a card making and scrapbooking class every Monday from 9 a.m. to noon. Donated cards are welcome.

Preschool screening

Preschool screening for 3-5 year olds for the Frazee-Vergas district is provided through Becker County Community Health Services. Call Annie at 218-847-5628 ext. 5419 to make an appointment. This one screening will provide your child the requirements for Early Childhood Screening. Minnesota law requires each child attend a health and developmental screening before kindergarten.

Adult Basic Education

GED and ESL classes are available through Detroit Lakes Adult Basic Education. Contact them at 218-844-5760 or stop by M-State, Room E 103 for a consultation. They are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
