Women’s retreat

Life Happens Women’s Retreat, a health, wellness and beauty experience, is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in Sanford Clinic, DL. There will be 30 vendors, women-focused discussions, light appetizers and keynote speaker Renee Rongen. It is free admission.

LWML Spring Rally

The Detroit Lakes Zone LWML Spring Rally hosted by Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pastor Phil Booe will speak on “Communications and Relationships.” Ingathering is bath kits for men and babies, devotional kits and sneakers for LIC.

Lake Region Garden Club

Lake Region Garden Club meets at 7 p.m. in the Lakes Homes Conference Room. Sharon Sinclair will be presenting the program on England’s Chelsea Flower Show. Guests are always welcome.

PEO Chapter FG

The PEO Chapter FG hosts a social at 7 p.m. in the home of Gothe Jensvold, with Cheryll Mollberg and Beve Melgaard assisting. Program will be presented by Gothe Jensvold. Dessert will be served. This meeting will be a regular meeting instead of the social that had been planned for today.

Alpha Theta Chapter

Alpha Theta Chapter meets in the Holiday Inn at 5 p.m. for social time and 5:30 for dinner, followed by the program “Like Living in a Norman Rockwell Painting — Little Minnesota,” authors, Dr. Deane and Jill Johnson. The monthly chapter meeting will follow the presentation.

Earth Day celebration

Earth Day celebration with projects, experiments and games to connect us to our earth is at 3:45 p.m. in Detroit Lakes Public Library. There will be snacks and door prizes.

Roosevelt Building open house

A Roosevelt Building open house is from 9 to 11 a.m. A ribbon cutting and program is at 10. The building has been remodeled and now houses the WorkForce Center.

Holy Rosary Spring Interlude

The Holy Rosary Spring Interlude fund-raiser is at 5:30 p.m. in the Holmes Ballroom. There will be a three-course dinner by Spanky’s on Stone Hearth, desserts by Creamy Creations, raffles, auctions, grand prize and a dance. Concordia bell choir concert

Tintinnabula, the Concordia College Bell Choir, directed by Jessica Westgard, begins its spring concert tour with a concert at 7:30 p.m. in First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. This 5-octave bell and chime choir will perform a variety music. The public is invited to attend. A free will offering will be taken.

Country Twirlers square dance

Country Twirlers square dance is 7:30–10 p.m. in the IOOF Hall, Detroit Lakes. Jim and Rita Lizakowski will be the caller and cuer.

Earth Day organic wine tasting

An Earth Day organic wine tasting is 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Seven Sisters Spirits. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to Natural Innovations, a non-profit group focused on environmental education.

AIS training

The Minnesota DNR Northwest Region offers a volunteer training workshop for citizens interested in informing the public about aquatic invasive species and how to slow their spread. It is from 9 a.m.-noon in Holiday Inn, Detroit Lakes. Tamarac volunteer training

Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge is recruiting for Aquatic Invasive Species educators. Why not spend some time in the great outdoors while educating boaters on how they can protect our lakes? Some weekend mornings required. Training will be offered by the MN DNR at the Holiday Inn in Detroit Lakes. Cowboy action shooting

Rekindle a page of the Old West and join in a cowboy action shooting with the Sucker Creek Outlaws at 1 p.m. at the Becker County Sportsman’s Club.

An Old Time Variety Dance is from 7 to 10 p.m. in the White Pine Room, Frazee. Music is by Marie and the Boys.

Lakes Area Community Concert Band

Lakes Area Community Concert Band’s 7th annual spring concert is at 4 p.m. in the Historic Holmes Theatre. It is a free-will offering.

Fried fish dinner

Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Callaway, hosts a fried fish dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is a free-will offering. The Mary/Martha ladies will also be holding a bake sale.

Square dance for heart

The Northern Minnesota Square Dancers host a benefit dance for the American Heart Association from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Waubun Community Center. Everyone is welcome to come and bid on items.

Color Guard breakfast

Lake Region Veterans Color Guard fundraiser breakfast is from 8 a.m. to noon in the DL Legion Club. Suggested donation is $6.50.

Soup and sandwich

Lake Eunice Evangelical Free Church, Detroit Lakes, hosts a soup and sandwich supper, followed by an old fashioned gospel hymn Singspiration, beginning at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

Odd Fellows meeting

There is an Odd Fellows meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the hall at 118 W. Holmes St. Visitors are always welcome.   

Kindergarten roundup

Detroit Lakes public schools kindergarten roundup and registration is at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. in Rossman and Roosevelt elementary schools. Each session is one hour.

Fashion trends

The DL Library hosts Fashion Trends & Issues: 1850s-1920s April 23-25 with Vickie Wendel, who follows women’s fashions from the sewing machine to ready-made clothing that came from the mail order catalog, at 7 p.m.

Chocolate Chill

Rescheduled from Polar Fest, the Chocolate Chill with chocolate samples and demonstrations is from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Washington Square Mall. Treat boxes for samples are $5. There will also be music and door prizes.

World Book Night

Sandra Cisneros’ book ‘House on Mango Street’ will be given away as part of World Book Night at 5:30 p.m. in La Barista. Everyone is welcome.

Lake Park garden Club

The Lake Park Garden Club meets at 1 p.m. in the Clubhouse at the Jane Nelson Knoff home, 14401 Co. Hwy 5, Lake Park. Roll Call: name a variety of mushroom that you know about or have raised. Garden Talk: Jim and Sue Carpenter. Business: Corner garden planting dates, weeding and watering sign up. District 11 Horticulture show planning. Hawley Art Show

The Hawley Art Show and Sale is April 18-21 in the Hawley Community Center. Artists can enter their work April 13-4 from 1 to 5 p.m. Registration is $5 per entry for professional and amateur classes and $3 for elementary and high school students. Kidsfirst preschool

Kidsfirst Preschool at First Lutheran Church, DL, began taking fall 2013 registrations on March 1. Please come in person and bring your child’s immunization records with you. Your child must be at least 3 years old to enroll. No phone registrations will be taken. Questions? Call Beth at 847-5656.

LP-A Community Education

The Lake Park-Audubon Community Education has several upcoming classes including

  • April 14, 4-5 p.m. in La Barista. Coffee 101. Topics include brewing secrets to a good cup of coffee, choosing the right beans for your taste, coffee tasting, espresso and lattes. Cost is $10.
  • May 7, 6-10 p.m., LPA elementary library. AARP class, 4-hour refresher course.   Fee is $18 for non-member and $16 for member.  Instructor is Tom Anderson. 
  • May 14, 6:30-8 p.m. at Country Fields Greenhouse. Would you like to have a garden, but think you don’t have the space?  Come see how to garden in containers or even hay bales. Fee is $6 plus supplies.

Toastmasters

The newly restructured 412 Lakes Area Toastmasters meets on the first and third Friday of each month from noon–1 p.m. in M State, room C-102 in Detroit Lakes. Meetings are free to the public and visitors are welcome.

L.A. Moms group

L.A. (Lakes Area) Moms is designed to nurture every mother. At our L.A. Moms group, you will have a chance to socialize with other moms, hear some great teaching, have discussion time and participate in creative activities. L.A. Moms is held the first and third Wednesday of each month throughout the school year from 9-11 a.m. at the Lakes Area Vineyard Church in Detroit Lakes. For more info, call 218-846-1199.

TOPS chapter 1251

Birthing class

St. Mary’s Innovis Health hosts childbirth preparation classes for expectant mothers in their sixth to seventh month of pregnancy. Topics include Labor & Delivery, Cesarean Birth, Role of the Labor Companion, Newborn Care, Unexpected Outcomes, Breast & Bottle Feeding, Postpartum Period, Breathing Patterns & Relaxation Techniques. Card making, scrapbook classes

The DL Senior Citizen Center hosts a card making and scrapbooking class every Monday from 9 a.m. to noon. Donated cards are welcome.

Preschool screening

Preschool screening for 3-5 year olds for the Frazee-Vergas district is provided through Becker County Community Health Services. Call Annie at 218-847-5628 ext. 5419 to make an appointment. This one screening will provide your child the requirements for Early Childhood Screening. Minnesota law requires each child attend a health and developmental screening before kindergarten.

Adult Basic Education

GED and ESL classes are available through Detroit Lakes Adult Basic Education. Contact them at 218-844-5760 or stop by M-State, Room E 103 for a consultation. They are open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Library Storytime

Children ages 3 through kindergarten are invited to the Detroit Lakes Library on Thursday and Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. for exciting stories and activities that are more fun than a barrel of monkeys. For more information, call 847-2168 or visit your library at 1000 Washington Ave.
