In an effort to raise public awareness and improve services for those with Parkinson’s disease, National Parkinson Foundation Minnesota sponsors a free seminar with speakers from the nationally recognized Struthers Parkinson’s Center, a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, DL. Friday, Sept. 27
The Friendly Squares hosts a square dance at the Park Rapids High School. The caller will be Mark Helfter, and Donna Stone will cue round dancing between tips. There will be “plus” dancing from 7:30 to 8 p.m. and mainstream from 8 to10. The club members will furnish potluck lunch after the dance. All square dancers and spectators are welcome.
Imagination Library fundraiser
The first hoedown to benefit the Imagination Library is from 5:30 to 11 p.m. in the Shorewood Pub. There will be a DJ, karaoke, silent and live auctions. Tickets are $35 and include dinner. They can be purchased at Price’s Fine Jewelry, Central Market, or by calling Amy at 841-2944.
The Becker County Republicans host the annual 2013 Fall Fundraiser in the Holiday Inn, Detroit Lakes. Social hour is from 5 to 6 p.m. and buffet begins at 6. There will be candidates, prizes and auctions. Get your tickets by calling John at 847-4638.

The Friends of Tamarac invite you to their third annual Toast to Tamarac from 4 to 8 p.m. at Richwood Winery. Fire & Ice
Essentia Health St. Mary’s Foundation hosts the Fire & Ice Experience fundraiser beginning at 6 p.m. at The Fireside. There will be three culinary stations, hors d-oeuvres and a variety of wines and beers. The silent auction includes many items including a cruise on Pickerel Lake, WE Fest tickets, Vikings tickets, getaways and more. Cormorant Lutheran Men’s Group
The Cormorant Lutheran Church Men’s Group hosts a free will offering breakfast at 9 a.m. honoring military veterans. The guest speaker will be Chaplain Gary Garvey on ‘My Life in War Zones.’ Everyone, men and women, are invited.

Blessing of the Animals
A service of “Blessing of the Animals” is at 4 p.m. in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, DL. All creatures great and small are invited to bring their humans to the service. The offering will be given to the Becker County Humane Society. Please bring pets on leashes or in a carrier. Refreshments will be served for all guests and their people following the service. Serving Those who Served
Patriot Assistance Dogs presents Serving Those who Serve from 4 to 6 p.m. in the DL Veterans Memorial Park. The event includes recognition of each veteran, the honor and sacrifices made by these veterans, presentation of awards, music and a keynote speech from Bradley Livingston. There will be brats, hot dogs, chips and more.
Fall color safari
Tamarac Refuge hosts a Fall Color Nature Photo Safari from 3 to 4 p.m. Experience autumn on the refuge through the lens of a camera. With the fall colors nearing their peak, we will travel by car caravan to some very scenic and perhaps less known areas on the refuge. Discover how Tamarac’s wildlife and plants prepare for winter. Meet at the Chippewa Picnic Area located 3 miles past the visitor center on County Hwy 26.
Monday, Sept. 30
The Lakes Area Birding Club meets at 7 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District office on Tower Road (note change of location...this meeting is NOT at the library). Stacy Salvevold, Wetlands assistant manager, will be presenting the program on birds, mammals and native plants found on the Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge. The public is welcome.
Church rummage, bake sale
Zion Lutheran Church, DL, hosts a rummage and bake sale Sept. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. and Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Barbecues, coffee and bars will be for sale as well.
Trinity Lutheran Church, DL, hosts a coat give-away (winter coats, hats, shoes, mittens, sweatshirts and other clothing). Items are on a first come, first serve basis, and sizes child to adult are available. The give-away is Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Oct. 14-16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
