Thursday, Oct. 10

Church rummage sale

United Methodist Church, DL, hosts a rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will also be coffee and coffee cake for $1.

Genealogical society

Heart O’Lakes Genealogical Society meets the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Becker County Museum. Anyone who is interested in researching their family history is invited to attend. There will be some time to research following the meeting.

PEO Chapter FG

P.E.O Chapter FG meets at 7 p.m. in the home of Sue Eidenschink, with Judy Fankhanel and Ardys Horner assisting.  Program will be visit from State Organizer.  Dessert will be served.

BC republicans

The Becker County Republicans meet at 7 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes City Offices.

Alpha Delta Kappa

The Alpha Theta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa meets in the Holiday Inn, Detroit Lakes. A social will begin at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 5:30. The business meeting will include a celebration of October being Alpha Kappa Founders’ Month.

Friday, Oct. 11

GFWC Library Club

The General Federation of Women’s Club Library Club hosts a bake potato supper from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Mahnomen School Cafeteria before the homecoming game. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under. Money raised by the club goes to various charities.

Saturday, Oct. 12

Quilt Expo

Quilt Expo, sponsored by the Lakes Area Quilters, is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Washington Square Mall, DL. The Quilt Expo includes a quilt display, demonstrations on cutting, piecing, applique, quilting, machine embroidery, embellishments and more. Craft items will be available for purchase with the funds to be used for community service projects.

Kalberer fundraiser

A fundraiser for Aaron Kalberer is from 4-8 p.m. in Shorewood Pub. Aaron was severely burned and has spent the past month in treatment at a burn center, with more treatment in his future. There will be a pork dinner, silent auction, beer tasting, raffles and more.

Meatball dinner

Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal, hosts a meatball dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. It is a free will offering. Takeout is available.

Sucker Creek Outlaws

The Sucker Creek Outlaws shootout starts with registration at noon, followed by the shoot at 1 p.m. Visitors and new members welcome.

Musical Homecoming

Lakes Area Music Teachers presents A Musical Homecoming at 4 p.m. in the First Lutheran Church, DL. Performers include Laker Singers, Erik Sukke, Chelsea Larson, Doug Newman, Tim Eggebraaten, Paul Heisler, Ashley Morben, Laura and Lori Paakh and Ann Ballard and Mark Champa.

Dad’s Belgian waffles

Jesus Little Lambs Preschool hosts a fundraiser serving Dad’s Belgian Waffles from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Vergas Event Center. All you can eat waffles served with sausage, toppings and beverages, made from scratch and served hot off the iron. Carry out plates available. It is a free will offering.

Columbus Day dinner

The Knights of Columbus annual Columbus Day dinner is from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center. Adults are $9 and ages 4 to 12 are $4.

Monday, Oct. 14

Wine tasting event

DL Breakfast Rotary Club hosts a wine tasting event at Spanky’s Stone Hearth. Happy hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7. Tickets are $50 per person and include a four-course meal and four wines, and also includes you in a chance to win a gift card to Spanky’s and wine giveaways. PEO Chapter DQ

Chapter DQ, P.E.O. meets at 1 p.m. in the home of Marcia Potvin. Assisting hostesses are Jane Besse, Sylvia Campion and Judy Quam. P.E.O. MN state officer Lauri Cushing will be visiting the chapter for this meeting.

Grieving my way

Grieving my Way, a support group for parents who have experienced the loss of a child of any age, meets the second Monday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes Library. For more info, call Brenda at 846-9275.

BC disaster drill

A Becker County Disaster Drill will be at 6 p.m. at the Becker County Courthouse. The drill will educate and train law enforcement, fire and EMS rescue. This is just a training exercise and no need for alarm.

Track, Field fundraiser

Ten DLHS girls have been selected to compete in Australia next summer in the Down Under International Track and Field competition. To cover travel expenses, they are selling Culligan Softener Salt and delivering it to customers’ homes. The delivered price will be $6.50 for a 40 pound back of regular salt, and $7.50 for a 40 pound bag of the Culligan Iron Out salt. Delivery date will be either Oct. 26 or 27, and people can order by contacting Mike Labine at 218-841-0601 or emailing mlabine@detlakes.k12.mn.us.

Mini flower show

The public is invited to participate in a flower show consisting of miniature floral arrangements on Saturday, Oct. 12. The miniature arrangements must be five inches or less. Only natural plant materials, fresh, treated, or dried may be used in the design. Mini arrangements can be entered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Lake Region Garden Club is sponsoring the flower show at Lakes Homes, Inc. (847 Hwy 10 East, Detroit Lakes). There is no limit on the number of entries a participant can enter. Judging of the designs will start at 1 p.m., with first, second, and third place awards in the novice, amateur, and advance divisions. A program on floral arranging by Val Voigt from Detroit Lakes Floral will be presented at 1. The flower show will be open for public viewing at 2:30 p.m. during the silver tea.

Coat give-away

Trinity Lutheran Church, DL, hosts a coat give-away (winter coats, hats, shoes, mittens, sweatshirts and other clothing). Items are on a first come, first serve basis, and sizes child to adult are available. The give-away is Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Oct. 14-16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Homebuyer education

A homebuyer education program coming to Detroit Lakes offers the chance to be informed before you buy. “Home Stretch” is an eight-hour workshop offered by a network of trained homebuyer educators throughout the state. This free class is from 5-9:30 p.m. Oct. 23 and 24 in the Lincoln Education Center, Detroit Lakes. To register, call 800-752-6579. The workshop also includes dinner both evenings and opportunities for free follow-up housing advising. The workshop agenda covers the steps to homeownership, budgeting, credit, the closing processing, real estate and more.

Caregivers conference

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the 10th annual Fargo-Moorhead Caregiver Conference focuses on “Caregiving – Recharging and Finding Balance.” The event is from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Hjemkomst Center, Moorhead. Pine Point Haunted House

The Pine Point Haunted House, Ponsford, is Oct. 19 and 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. each night. Cost is $5 per person and proceeds go to the Pine Point Powwow Committee.
