Human society fundraiser
A Human Society of the Lakes fundraiser offers several wine tasting stations, along with the tasty gourmet appetizers from The Fireside from 7-10 p.m. The fun, casual evening will also include a variety of ‘wine’ themed trinkets for sale. Music by acoustic guitar player Mike Holtz is at 8; Scott Lindman from Paustis Wine Company will do a short presentation. A limited number of tickets are on sale now for $40 and all ticket buyers will be entered in a drawing to win a $100 gift certificate to The Fireside and 2 tickets to a future wine tasting event at The Fireside. Eagles charity auction
The Detroit Lakes Eagles host a live charity auction for members and guests at 6 p.m. A few of the items on the auction include WE Fest tickets, bathroom faucet and pontoon ride among others.
A benefit for Rob Vigesaa is from 5 to 11 p.m. at Shorewood Pub, DL. There will be a silent auction, raffle and spaghetti dinner. Donations can also be made at American National Bank, DL. Rob was involved in a motorcycle accident and sustained serious head and body injuries.
Old time variety dance
An old time variety dance is 7-10 p.m. in the White Pine Room, Frazee. Music is by Albert Mikesh.
Immanuel Lutheran Church of Shell Lake hosts a lutefisk, lefse, meatball dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will also be Rommegrot and desserts, quilt raffle and quilts for sale.
The Lake Country Woodcarvers meets beginning at 9 a.m. in the Washington Square Mall. Come watch demonstrations and visit.
Sunday, Oct. 20
St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Hawley, hosts a turkey dinner from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Adults are $10, ages 6-12 are $5 and preschool are free.
Miss MN welcome home
A welcome home party for Miss Minnesota 2013 Rebecca Yeh, who competed at the Miss America Pageant and won a preliminary talent award and was 4th runner-up to Miss America, is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Grace Lutheran Church, DL. Please use north entrance. Rebecca will be performing her Miss America talent, presenting some of her Miss America wardrobe and share her Miss America experience.
Lakes Figure Skating
Lakes Figure Skating starts its 2013/2014 season on Oct. 20 in the Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes. If you have a child interested in ice skating, come at 4 p.m. to register your skater. Youth Journeys program
Hospice of the Red River Valley holds its Youth Journeys program from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Hospice of the Red River Valley, 1701 38th Ave. S., Fargo The program is open to all youth, ages 6-18, who have experienced the death of someone close to them. The day will be led by grief specialists and includes exploring what grief is and feelings associated with grief, along with identifying sources of support and methods of self care. Pumpkins and ponies
On Oct. 19-20, Timberline Ranch hosts Pumpkins and Ponies filled with pony rides, horse rides, small petting farm, hot dogs over afire and more pumpkins from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weather permitting. Cost is $20. Timberline is located off Highway 34 east on Highway 25 north.
Track, Field fundraiser
Ten DLHS girls have been selected to compete in Australia next summer in the Down Under International Track and Field competition. To cover travel expenses, they are selling Culligan Softener Salt and delivering it to customers’ homes. The delivered price will be $6.50 for a 40 pound back of regular salt, and $7.50 for a 40 pound bag of the Culligan Iron Out salt. Delivery date will be either Oct. 26 or 27, and people can order by contacting Mike Labine at 218-841-0601 or emailing email@example.com.
A homebuyer education program coming to Detroit Lakes offers the chance to be informed before you buy. “Home Stretch” is an eight-hour workshop offered by a network of trained homebuyer educators throughout the state. This free class is from 5-9:30 p.m. Oct. 23 and 24 in the Lincoln Education Center, Detroit Lakes. To register, call 800-752-6579. The workshop also includes dinner both evenings and opportunities for free follow-up housing advising. The workshop agenda covers the steps to homeownership, budgeting, credit, the closing processing, real estate and more.
