Thursday, May 8

MAC/NAPS

The May MAC-NAPS distribution is from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Applications are available at St. Luke’s Church. To quality you must be at least 60 years of age and meet the USDA income guidelines.

PEO Chapter FG

P.E.O Chapter FG meets at 7 p.m. in the home of Julie Aaneson, with Betty Gilbert and Beverly Elletson assisting. Program will be presented by Gothe Jensvold. Refreshments will be served.

BC Republicans

The Becker County Republicans meet at 7 p.m. in the City Hall meeting room.

Genealogical society

The Heart O’Lakes Genealogical Society meets on the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Becker County Museum. Our speaker will be Willie Humbeck, who will speak about Germany. Anyone who is interested in researching their family history is invited to attend. There will be some time to research following the meeting. Friday, May 9

Tacos in a bag

The ALC Tacos-In-A-Bag fundraiser is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holmes Theatre entrance at the DLCCC. Cost is $4 for taco in a bag or $5 with a can of pop/water.

Friendly Squares

Park Rapids Friendly Squares hosts their last square dance for the season. The dance will be at Century School. Larry Johansen will be calling. Plus 7:30-8; Mainstream 8-10. Donna Stone will cue rounds between tips. Club members will serve potluck lunch after the dance. All square dancers and spectators are welcome. Housing, community dialogue

Join USDA Rural Development, Greater Minnesota Housing Fund and Minnesota Housing along with local and statewide stakeholders for a day of sharing and learning from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Bigwood Event center, Fergus Falls. This Housing & Community Dialogue is designed to engage a broad network of stakeholders for tactical discussions about specific affordable housing needs, including workforce housing, supportive housing, and managing an aging housing stock. The event is free and open to the public.

Gress benefit, silent auction

A benefit and silent auction for Justin Gress and his family will be held at the El Zagal Shrine, 1429 Third St. N., Fargo, starting at 4 p.m. Justin suffered a heart attack on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 12, and has ongoing medical expenses as a result. Donations may be made prior to the benefit at Janke’s Sew & Vac, 607 Washington Ave., Detroit Lakes, or online at www.giveforward.com/ fundraiser/9jt3/justin-gress-fund.

Mother Daughter Luncheon

“Wedding Remembered,” a mother daughter luncheon, is at noon in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, DL. Tickets are $8.

Spring Vendor Blender

A Spring Vendor Blender and Craft Show is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Holiday Inn, Detroit Lakes. It is free admission and over $1,000 in door prizes will be given away. For more information, contact Michelle at 218-841-7872.

The Lakes Area Woodcarvers demonstrate their craft in the Washington Square Mall. Stop by to check it out and visit.

Cowboy Action Shooting

The Sucker Creek Outlaws hold their monthly match, beginning with registration at noon at the Becker County Sportsman’s Club. Shoot is at 1 p.m. A new cowboy shooting seminar is May 17 at noon. Anyone interested can come give it a try. For more info, call Les at 218-396-0532.

Mother’s Day dinner

The DL Knights of Columbus host a Mother’s Day ham and turkey dinner from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center. Adults are $9, ages 4-12 are $4 and under age 4 are free.

Overeaters Anonymous

Overeaters Anonymous Detroit Lakes Serenity Group meets Tuesdays at noon in the second floor library of the First Lutheran Church.

Alzheimers-Dementia group

The Alzheimers-Dementia Support Group meets at 2 p.m. in the DL Library. These meetings are open to the public. This month, Attorney Leah R. Gilbert of the Pluto Legal, PLLC, will present a free educational workshop on medical pre-planning. There is no charge for this workshop.

Women’s bridge association

Sons of Norway

Vikingland Lodge No. 495, Detroit Lakes, celebrates Syttende Mai - Norway’s Constitution Day at 7 p.m. in Union Central. All members are asked to wear their bunads or Norwegian sweaters. A foreign exchange student from Croatia will sing and tell about his country. There will also be special Norwegian goodies to taste like Rommegrot, fruit soup, fattimann, krumkake, sandbakkels, kransekake (wreath cake) and almond cake. Public is invited.

Youth ATV safety training class

Woods-n-Wheels ATV Club hosts a youth ATV safety training class May 17 in Detroit Lakes. Sign up is May 8 at 6 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes VFW or by calling 218-847-4868.

Twine rug class

Do you like the look of homemade rugs? Don’t like to let anything go to waste? Turn old jeans, t-shirts, bed sheets, towels or virtually any material into beautiful rugs. Prep work is required prior to each class, which is held in the LPA elementary lunchroom. Bring scissors, needle and thread to class, May 15 and 22, from 6-8 p.m. Fee is $25.
