Paws to Read Kick-Off

The Detroit Lakes Public Library invites area kids, teens and families to Paws to Read all summer long at the Library. The kick-off party begins at 2 p.m. Sign up for summer reading and participate in various activities, including making paper bag animal puppets to decorate the library.

Parkinson’s Support Group

The Parkinson’s Support Group meets the last Thursday of each month at 2 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, DL. This month’s speaker is Dr. Jon Aligada, psychologist, speaking about depression and anxiety. If you have any questions, call Sue Sorensen, LSW, at 844-7118.

Talk of the Town

Judy Bell with Tamarac Birding will speak on “Beginning Birding” during “Talk of the Town” beginning at 9 a.m. in the Cormorant Community Center. Bring your binoculars. Come and enjoy this free event. Coffee and cookies will be served.

An Eagles Street Dance featuring Silverado is 8 p.m. to midnight on Holmes Street, Detroit Lakes.

Drive in movie

A Kick-Off to Summer “Drive In Movie” is in the LPA High School parking lot. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets (and maybe your bug spray) for a movie under the stars. There will be a big screen and big sound to help families celebrate the start of summer. If rain, the movie will be in the school theater. The movie is free, and concessions will be available. Hiking trail book signing

The Laurentian Lakes Chapter of the North Country Trail Association hosts a book signing event in La Barista, DL. A short program about the NCT will start at 5 p.m., followed by time for Q&A and opportunities to purchase a book and have it signed. Copies are $20. Legion Auxiliary breakfast

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15 hosts a pancake/French toast breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 the DL Legion. A suggested donation of $6.50.

Pancake breakfast

The Knights of Columbus host a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center.

Royalty send-off

The Miss Minnesota send-off for local royalty is at 2 p.m. in the Frazee Event Center. Everyone is welcome to see the dresses and talents of Miss Frazee and Miss Frazee Outstanding Teen, Miss Heart of the Lakes, Miss Perham and Miss Perham Outstanding Teen, Miss Northwest and Miss Northwest Teen.

VBS, Sunday outside worship

Zion Lutheran Church, DL, hosts outdoor worship, VBS children singing, potluck picnic and bouncy house and joust for the kids from Games Galore beginning at 10:30 a.m. Bring your family, a lawnchair and a potluck dish to share.

Skunk movie

Tamarac Wildlife Refuge presents the movie, “Is that Skunk?” at 2 p.m. in the visitor center. Utterly recognizable yet still mysterious, these black and white creatures inhabit woods and neighborhoods all across America. What is like to be a skunk? Find out as scientists track them day and night to reveal some smelly secrets. Stay for a short presentation: Tamarac’s Wily Weasels.

Open Barn 2

The DL Chamber of Commerce, the Perham Area Chamber of Commerce and the Vergas Community Club sponsor the Open Barn 2, an evening of music, food, drinks and “Business After Hours” from 5-7 p.m. at Five Lakes Resort. It is free and open to the public. The Buffalo River Ramblers will be entertaining with bluegrass music during the entire event. Over 30 area businesses and organizations will be having display tables at the event. Free appetizers sponsored by Fair Hills Resorts and Five Lakes Resorts, and a cash bar.

DLHS Class of 1984 reunion

The Detroit Lakes Class of 1984 reunion is June 28, beginning with social hour at 6 p.m., with dinner to follow, at the Detroit Country Club. Miss Northwest candidates

The Miss Northwest Pageant Committee is looking for Miss Northwest Outstanding Teen contestants ages 13-16 and Miss contestants ages 17-23. The pageant will be July 11, and application closing date is June 20. The Miss Northwest pageant is affiliated with the Miss America franchise. ELCA Women’s Retreat

The ELCA Women’s Bible Retreat for Clusters 5, 6 and 7 will be held at the Holiday Inn in Detroit Lakes on June 2. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the retreat beginning at 9. The theme “Let There Be Peace” will feature Pastor Jillene Gallatin from Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes as the Bible Study leader. A musical presentation will be given by Tami Jensen of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Osage. In the afternoon, inspirational speaker Kim Wagner will present. The closing session will include a communion service led by Pastor Hope Deutscher from Living Grace Lutheran Church in Hawley. Retreat concludes at 3.
