Friends of Maplewood
The Friends of Maplewood annual meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter in Maplewood State Park. The Friends of Maplewood Annual Meeting is a time for all interested Friends of Maplewood State Park to gather and find out what has been happening at the park and to share your thoughts and ideas for Maplewood. There will be no meal, just desserts.

Grace Lutheran Church, DL, hosts its annual salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $7. Tickets are available at the church from 8 a.m. to noon Monday-Friday and can be purchased at the door.

Wilderness kayak cruise
Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act with a Wilderness Kayak Cruise beginning at 10 a.m. Experience the beauty of an early autumn day on the lake. Join a refuge ranger to explore the wilderness islands of Tamarac Lake. What is “designated” wilderness and what does it mean for people and wildlife? Meet at the North Tamarac access with your canoe or kayak for this adventure. Life jackets are required.
Sunday, Sept. 7
Lake Grove Lutheran Church hosts a chicken dinner from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Waubun Community Center. Adults are $8. There will also be a Country Store.
The Knights of Columbus sponsor a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center.
Fall dinner and raffle
The Assumption Catholic Church, Callaway, hosts a fall dinner and raffle from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a roast beef dinner, cake walk, silent auction, kids’ games, and more. Adults are $10, kids 6-12 are $5 and ages 5 and under are free.
Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Frazee, hosts a ham dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is a freewill offering. Money raised will go to the preschool/daycare.
‘Forever Wild’ movie

A community drum workshop is today with Spirit, a performing and teaching artist who will teach basic hand drumming and percussion techniques while incorporating the life principles of building community, developing individual creativity and fostering cooperation. This interactive musical experience will encourage people of all ages to come together, learn and share the universal language of music. Free admission and open to the public. The workshop is at the Frazee LINK site at 1:30 p.m., Lake Park City Center at 4 and the DL Library at 7.
PEO Chapter DQ
Chapter DQ, P.E.O. meets at 5 p.m. for a potluck and regular meeting in the home of Nancy Cristensen. Jane Besse, Liz Fossen and Vicki Stigen will assist the hostess. The program, “We Believe in the Gifts of P.E.O.,” a mixer, will be presented by the Membership Committee.

Sons of Norway
Vikingland Lodge No. 495, Detroit Lakes, meets at 7 p.m. in Union Central on Lake Avenue. The program is the youth who went to camp will tell about their two weeks at camp. Maren Hoban will show/tell about her 4-H Project that received Grand Champion at Becker County Fair. Demonstration of lefse making using a “lumpe paddle.” The public is welcome to attend.

School musical auditions
Detroit Lakes Public Schools is pleased to announce auditions for its 2014 fall musical, “You’re In Town (Urinetown).” Auditions will be Sept. 2 from 7-9 p.m. in DLMS, Sept. 3 from 4:30–6 in DLHS, Sept. 4 and 5 from 4:30-6 in DLHS and 7–9:30 in DLMS. Auditions are open to students in grades 8 through 12. Full schedules including dance practices and audition materials are available in the DLHS commons. Performance dates are Oct. 30, Nov. 1, 7 and 8 at 7:30 and a 3 matinee on Nov. 2.
