Harriet F. "Toots" Somdahl, 72, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, November 8, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.
Harriet was born to Henry and Edna (Iverson) Grossman on December 15, 1936 in Pelican Rapids. She grew up and attended country school in rural Audubon, and graduated from Audubon High School in 1954. She worked at Sunnyside Nursing Home in Lake Park, and later attended Detroit Lakes Business College.
Harriet then worked as the Audubon School secretary for the next 12 years. She was united in marriage to Roy Somdahl on July 30, 1967 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in rural Audubon. They made their home in Chippewa Falls, Wis., for a short time before moving to Detroit Lakes. Harriet spent the next number of years raising her children and taking care of the home. She later worked for the grocery stores in Detroit Lakes.
Harriet enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, gardening, puzzles and traveling. She also loved to bake Norwegian foods and cookies at Christmas. She collected salt and pepper shakers, and was said to have over 300 sets. Spending time with her granddaughter was very special to Harriet.
Surviving Harriet are her husband, Roy; one daughter, Faye Somdahl of West Fargo; one son, Allen Somdahl of Detroit Lakes; one granddaughter, Keli Somdahl of Detroit Lakes; one brother, Duane (Phyllis) Grossman of Audubon; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Harriet in death were her parents; one brother, Dale Grossman; and her stepfather, Alfred Olson.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, rural Audubon, with interment in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Audubon.
