Helen M. Brekken, 74, of Audubon, died Sunday, June 7, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.
Helen M. Johnson was born to Bennie and Anna (Olson) Johnson on April 25, 1935 in Ohio, Ill. At the age of 10 she moved with her family to Bemidji, where she later graduated from Bemidji High School. She then attended Northwest Airlines Training School. Following her training, she worked as a reservationist for a short while.
On May 27, 1956 Helen married Gordon Brekken in Bemidji. They made their home in Lincoln, Neb., where Gordon was stationed with the Air Force. In 1958, they moved to the Brekken family farm in rural Audubon. Helen loved to cook and entertain friends and family at her home. She also enjoyed oil painting and traveling. She was very active at St. Peter's Church. Time spent with her grandchildren was very important to her.
Surviving Helen are her husband, Gordon; one son, Russ (Judy) Brekken of Audubon; two daughters, Marcy Brekken of Minneota, Minn., and Audrey (Paul) Lykken of Owatonna, Minn., four grandchildren; one sister, Velma (Clifford) Martin of Stirum, N.D.; two brothers, Donald Johnson of Yakima, Wash., and Gordon (Helen) Johnson of Bagley, Minn.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Helen in death were her parents; one brother, Howard Johnson; three sisters, Elva Johnson, Gladys Delaney and Doris Stephani; son-in-law, Bill Holm; and grandson, Makenzie Lykken.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m., in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, rural Audubon, with the Rev. Jill Steichen officiating.
