March 24, 1922-Sept. 13, 2010
Helen Marcella Fugere, 88, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, September 13, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Helen was born to Ole and Sophia Lee LeGrand on March 24, 1922 in Moorhead. She graduated from Moorhead High School and Moorhead State Teachers College. On October 21, 1967 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Thomas Fugere, in Park Rapids.
Helen taught in the Fargo Public Schools at Roosevelt and Ben Franklin, until retiring in 1984. She and her husband also owned and operated Tom's Antique Shops in Fargo and Detroit Lakes. Following their retirement, they made their home in Detroit Lakes.
Helen loved her home on the lake and welcomed friends and neighbors in for coffee, cookies and a good visit -- always with her beloved poodles by her side. Helen never lost the desire to teach children, and in her retirement helped schoolchildren learn to read.
Surviving Helen are two brothers, Odis (Eunice) LeGrand of Valley City, N.D., and Glenn (Marion) LeGrand of Sioux City, Iowa; her best buddies, "Muffin" and "Jolie"; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Helen in death were her parents; her husband, Thomas (1999); and her sister, Arlene Thompson.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel in Detroit Lakes, with visitation for one hour prior to services. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
