Slick roadways contributed to a crash Thursday night involving a Beltrami County Sheriff's deputy.

The crash was the culmination of a 15-mile high-speed pursuit that started with a Bemidji Police traffic stop at Beltrami Avenue Northwest and 5th Street Northwest.

According to a police report, the suspect driver, later identified as a 17-year-old boy, became uncooperative during the 7:22 p.m. traffic stop and fled from the police officer after backup was called.

The suspect drove down Division Street and eventually headed south on Highway 71 to Hubbard County Road 118, according to Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp.

Deputy Jake Hodapp then attempted to make a move to stop the vehicle utilizing a PIT maneuver, the sheriff said. In a PIT maneuver, the pursuing vehicle forces the pursued vehicle to abruptly turn sideways, causing the driver to lose control and stop.

However, due to the wet roadway, the two vehicles collided, and the squad car sustained damage, Phil Hodapp said.

Following the crash, the suspect attacked Deputy Hodapp, the sheriff said.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, Phil Hodapp said. He was taken to Northwest Minnesota Juvenile Center pending charges.

Deputy Hodapp suffered a sprained ankle during the incident when his foot slipped and went under the squad car, the sheriff said.

The amount of damage done to the squad car has not yet been determined, but the sheriff said the front end sustained damage and a bumper was torn off.

Assisting agencies in the pursuit included the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Bemidji Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol and Hubbard County Sheriff's Office.
