Hilma M. Kangas, 89, of Wolf Lake, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3 at David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes. It will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Funeral services for Hilma will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 4 in Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Snellman, with interment at Pickerel Lake Community Cemetery, rural Osage.
Hilma was born to Eli and Maria (Yliniemi) Yoki on March 23, 1921 in Shell Lake Township, rural Becker County. She attended country school near Shell Lake, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1938. She was united in marriage to Leonard Kangas on December 18, 1938, in Toad Lake Township. They resided in Wolf Lake and began to raise their family.
From 1960 to 1966, Hilma worked at various jobs. She started working for Becker County Social Services in 1966, and retired in 1983. Hilma lived for five years at the Greystone apartments in Detroit Lakes and most recently was a resident at Rose Haven in Menahga.
Hilma will be remembered and missed by her children, Mary Bartel of Wolf Lake, Ivan (Kathy) Kangas of Osage, Irving Kangas of Wolf Lake, Steven Kangas of Minneapolis, Carlton (Jane) Kangas of Fall Creek, Wis., Merlin Kangas of Wolf Lake, Arlen (Yvonne) Kangas of Osage, Eldon (Michelle) Kangas of Baxter, Minn.,
E. Howard (Terri) Kangas of Ottertail, and Dagne Kangas of Minneapolis; daughter-in-law, Nancy Kangas of Hugo, Minn.; and son-in-law, Fred Groth of Mentor, Minn. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Preceding Hilma in death were her parents; husband Leonard (1979); one son, John Kangas; and one daughter, Lillian Groth.
