Hornets' expectations are at an all-time high
Spirits and expectations are on the rise for the Frazee boys' golf team, as they enter the 2011 season.
Yes, they do have the reigning Class 1A state champion returning to defend his title in junior Beau Hanson.
But there is more to be optimistic for the Hornets as their team expectations are at an all-time high, as well.
"I am pretty confident we should be right there in the top three to four teams in the Heart O'Lakes Conference," said Frazee head coach John Olson. "We are expecting big things as a team."
With Hanson returning and posting under-par scores, the Hornets also return last year's state qualifier junior Zack Ziegler, along with Josh Kertscher, to provide a solid top three part of the lineup.
The key to the team's overall success may come down to who wrangles the No. 4 spot on the team, Olson said.
"We need a No. 4 golfer to step up and break 90," Olson said. "Zack and Josh also need to consistently shoot under bogey (80-84), as well."
Hanson is obviously looking to repeat as the Class 1A state champion and he's been preparing for his defense of it well during the offseason.
He will also be competing in a few junior MGA/PGA events during the season, but now also has his team's success in mind.
"He's excited and has been helping with the team," Olson said.
There are several players vying for the No. 4 spot on the team, as well as the final two spots.
Two of those in the hunt are Travis Gray and Trevor Stilke, Olson said.
The Hornets will open the season, weather willing, Wednesday, April 13, at Wildflower and will have their first conference meet Monday, April 18, at West Central.
