High school football games late in the year can often remind coaches and players that there are plenty things to work on. With Fertile-Beltrami, the lesson might be to hold onto the football.

Frazee (4-4) forced Fertile-Beltrami (6-2) to commit six turnovers in a 22-6 win Thursday in the first of five Minnesota high school games played at the Fargodome.

"We haven't even fumbled the ball that much this year," said Falcons coach Brian Nelson. "I think we might have had two all year coming into this one."

Frazee forced two fumbles in the first quarter alone and five in the whole game. The Hornets also forced an interception, while giving up 172 yards to the Falcons.

Hornets senior defensive end Dan Janu forced both Falcon fumbles in the first quarter with one of them resulting in a touchdown.

"They had a loose grip when they were running with the ball," Janu said. "So I just wanted to try and grab it from them."

Frazee coach Jim Rader said it was the second-best performance he's seen from his defense this season. He said the team's best defensive performance came in a 35-0 win over Red Lake County on Sept. 23.

Frazee's four wins have come in its last five games, and the defense has played a role. The Hornets opened the season with blowout losses, yet have recovered, giving up a total of 31 points in their four wins.

The Hornets padded the lead to 22-6 when Cody Piper, who rushed for 132 yards, scored midway through the fourth.

"We just keep pounding at a team and wear them down later in the game," said Piper, who had 34 carries. "That's what we work on, us being more in shape later in the game."

Outlasting an opponent could come in handy considering Frazee opens the playoffs at Warroad, which went toe-to-toe with Hawley on Wednesday in a 55-48 loss.

The Falcons, despite losing their last two games, take the top seed into the Class 1A, Section 8 playoffs.

"I guess it is a wake-up call to our kids," Nelson said. "We have to be ready to play in the first quarter."
