The good news is the Frazee softball team is done facing Hawley pitcher Jessy Noreen for this season; the bad news is they will have to see her the next four years.

The Nuggets' diminutive eighth-grade pitcher was on target against the Hornet batters, pitching six shutout innings, with one walk and season-high 12 strikeouts in a 10-0 Hawley victory.

The Nugget hitters also made a statement, collecting 13 hits, including a rare fence-busting homerun over right field by sophomore Jordan Iverson --± who missed hitting for the cycle by a triple.

"In our first game against Hawley (a 5-1 loss), they didn't hit the ball like they did today," said Frazee head coach Dave Trautman, whose team falls to 3-8 on the season. "(Noreen) is a good control pitcher. She was able to pick the outside corners and hit all her targets."

The first two batters Noreen faced ended up being strikeouts, which put her into an early groove, which lasted the rest of the game.

By the time the third inning ended, Noreen had collected six strikeouts.

"I tried to go out and attack the hitters right away and (after the quick strikeouts), I was able to keep a good rhythm going," Noreen said. "The defense also helped me a lot."

That Nugget defense was solid, not committing any errors and stealing away at least two Frazee base hits -- including a diving snag by senior shortstop Sam Spaeth in the fifth inning.

"The defense has been there for me all season," Noreen added. "That makes me better."

Noreen had a no-hitter going up to the fourth frame, when hot-hitting Becca Buhr broke it up with a one-out single. Buhr is leading Frazee in hitting with an above .500 batting average.

Missy Viste is also a leading batter for Frazee, hitting just over .400.

"Both have been hitting well for us," Trautman added.

Hawley gave Noreen a nice 3-0 cushion in the second inning, with Nicole Olson gaining an RBI single, while Frazee hurt itself with two of its five errors coming in the second.

"We gave a couple of runs away in that inning," the Frazee coach commented.

Hornet starting pitcher junior Kristi Vogt pitched the first four innings, then gave way to Viste, who went 2.1 innings.

Vogt reentered in the seventh to close down a four-run Hawley inning.

Iverson had three consecutive hits in the fifth through seventh innings, including a single, two-run homer and a two-run double to finish with four RBIs on the day.

Another Noreen, older sister Jenny (a junior), finished with a 3-5 performance with an RBI and double.

Sasha Cook pitched the last inning for Hawley, allowing no hits and striking out two.

For Frazee, the quiet bats have been a struggle all season, thus far, Trautman said.

"That's been one of the things, is we haven't had enough base runners," he added. "We've fallen down early and can't come back. Our pitching has gotten better, though. Earlier in the season, we were walking 10-11 batters, today we only had three walks."

Another bright spot for the Hornets has been junior catcher Chelsea Nordquist, who had two putouts against Hawley and has 11 assists on the season.

"Chelsea has given up solid play at the catcher spot," Trautman said.

The Hornets will host Perham Monday and West Central Area Tuesday, with both games starting at 4:30 p.m.
