Hornets tip Yellowjackets on the mat
Trent Jahnke gave No. 9AA Perham its only lead of the match 24-22 with a 3:01 pin of Brandon DeGroat at 220 pounds, but No. 3A Garrett Malstrom saved the day for the No. 3A Frazee Hornets as he outlasted Yellowjacket heavyweight Jesse Bucholz in a 5-1 decision and Frazee snuck out of Perham with a one-point victory 25-24 in a heated wrestling match Tuesday evening.
Frazee took the first two matches of the night. 106-pounder Tanner Eischens won a major decision over Dylan Fudge 10-0 to put the Hornets up 4-0. At 113, No. 5A Tanner Reetz defeated Ben Nelson 8-3 to give the Hornets a 7-0 edge.
Wrestling up at 138, No. 6A 132-pounder Austin Skillings, of Frazee, built an 11-3 lead late in the third period on Dylan Perrine. Perrine escaped with five seconds remaining in the match to save a major decision 11-4 and Frazee took a 13-6 lead.
Hunter Sorenson took a slim 1-0 lead into the third period on Colin Neitzke before a three-point near fall gave the Hornet 145-pounder a 4-0 lead.
Sorenson held off Neitzke pinning both arms. Neitzke scored his lone point on a technical violation dropping the match 4-1. Frazee upped its lead to 16-6.
Nate Starry gave the Hornets their largest advantage of the night 19-6 with a 7-1 victory over Austen Schultz at 152 pounds before Perham started a comeback.
Patrick Glynn got a rousing reply from the Perham faithful with a pin at 3:29 of Tanner Bachmann at 160 pounds. Glynn led 2-0 on an escape and a stalling call on Bachmann before earning the fall to put Perham back in the match down 19-12.
McKalen Hedlund saved what would be a valuable point with an escape at the third period buzzer in a 13-6 loss to Perham’s Cole Schmitz. Schmitz controlled the match leading 2-1 after the first, 6-3 after the second and outscoring Hedlund 5-2 in the third period.
The 182-pound match featured a battle between No. 6A Kody VanDenEykel of Frazee and No. 9AA William Parks.
Both wrestlers failed to score in the first two periods. Parks opted to give up an escape point after VanDenEykel chose down to start the third. A stalling call on the Frazee senior evened the match at one point all leading each wrestler to shoot for takedowns to win it late.
Parks was close but VanDenEykel turned the tables on the Perham junior to win 3-1 and give Frazee breathing room at 22-15.
Ryan Brandt and Jesse Klatt fought a close battle to overtime at 195 pounds in a match Perham needed badly.
Tied at two after two and at three after the third period, Klatt scored a takedown in front of his own bench to again get Perham within four points down 22-18 winning a 5-3 OT decision.
That’s when Jahnke stuck DeGroat at 3:01 to give Perham the lead 24-22 eliciting a huge response from the home crowd heading into the final match of heavies won by Malstrom 5-1 over Bucholz.
