Hot-shooting Spuds drop Detroit Lakes
No matter what defense the Detroit Lakes boys' basketball team threw at the visiting Moorhead Spuds, their shots were consistently sinking.
A high shooting percentage, combined with an inside-outside scoring attack of post Wes Anderson and guard Matt Fernholz, enabled the Spuds (3-5) to cruise to an 89-67 victory over the Lakers (4-5) Tuesday inside Ralph Anderson Gym.
"We tried to get some pressure on them defensively, we tried s our zone, our 1-3-1, but they were making their tough shots," said DL head coach Robb Flint. "We didn't hit many of our outside shots."
The Spuds had 10 different scorers, while Fernholz did his damage from beyond the three-point line with five to key his 19 points. Anderson played also well in the paint with 12 field goals and 24 points.
The Lakers had their own scoring machine in junior post Josh Stalberger, who racked up a season-high 30 points, including a pair of treys.
Stalberger has hit for double digits in his last four games and is starting to emerge as a potent scoring threat.
"Josh has played extremely well," Flint said. "He is playing with a lot of confidence and we need to find ways to get him the ball. His footwork has been good and he's just playing a step above everyone else."
The Spuds employed a versatile offensive scoring attack, with a penetrating style of game to open up the perimeter and force the ball inside to Anderson, where he finished off plenty of opportunities.
On the flip side, the Lakers' perimeter game wasn't clicking. Junior guard Connor McLeod finished with 11 points, but DL couldn't maintain pace with the Spuds' outside shooting.
"We need a better mentality of being ready to shoot the ball after the pass," Flint added.
Moorhead attacked the inside early in the first half to establish a 32-20 lead at the 4:46 mark.
After the Lakers adjusted and shut down the paint, the Spuds went to Fernholz and their perimeter game to widen the gap to 39-24 at the three-minute mark, on Fernholz's third three of the first half.
By the time halftime hit, the Spuds led 41-28.
Moorhead didn't let up in the second half, hitting the majority of its first shots to secure and seal the game.
"In the second half, they just were hitting a bunch of tough shots," Flint said. "And we shouldn't have let Fernholz get going, either."
DL's back court played well, dishing the ball to Stalberger, as point guard Connor Hedstrom had 10 assists.
"The guys did a good job getting Josh the ball," Flint said.
The Lakers will host Mid-State Conference foe Wadena-Deer Creek (4-4) Friday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
DL third in St. Francis Tournament
After a narrow defeat to Zimmerman to open the St. Francis Tournament Dec. 29-30, the Lakers rebounded with a victory over Dassel-Cokato (1-7) in the bronze game by the score of 63-56.
Stalberger had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Joe Mollberg added 18 points.
"We didn't shoot well from the outside and were a step slow and let them stay in the game early, but our guys didn't fold and pulled out the win," Flint said.
The Lakers also picked up a big section win over Thief River Falls (5-3) Dec. 22, a road victory, by the score of 64-57.
Stalberger again had 16 points, followed by Brian Labat's 13 and Alex Guetter's six points and eight rebounds.
