At about noon on Wednesday, the Detroit Lakes Fire Department was called to a fire at the Mike and Sue Dahring house north of Detroit Lakes.

"By the time we got there, the west half was burned off. We put a stop to it, but with the fire damage and temperatures, the guys were freezing up," Fire Chief Jeff Swanson said.

The fire started in the heating room of the house, located on the 28000 block of 220th St., north of Detroit Lakes.

Firefighters brought in a backhoe and demolished the house, saving a garage located six feet away.

Swanson said the firefighters were able to save some possession from the house, which was a total loss.

Two dogs were saved, and no one was home at the time of the fire. A cat in an out-building was also unhurt.

Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours, and received mutual aid from Frazee and Callaway fire departments.

"It was a good thing no one was home," Swanson said.

Anytime there's a fire in the winter and it's close to Christmas, it makes the situation even harder, he added.

A benefit fund has been set up at Midwest Bank in Detroit Lakes for the family.
