FARGO – Employees learned in a series of meetings Wednesday that The Hub entertainment center in Fargo will be closing June 1.

Tom Poole, owner of The Avalon Events Center in downtown Fargo and former director of sales for The Hub, confirmed the news Wednesday night.

Poole will purchase The Hub with the hopes of reopening around Labor Day after a $1 million renovation.

The new facility, which will “essentially be a convention and special events operation,” will be called The Fargo Avalon. The current Avalon, which has been in business for 15 years, will be referred to as The Fargo Avalon Downtown.

The Fargo Avalon will host weddings and corporate events, accommodating 50 to 2,000 guests, and include no public restaurants or bars. Free shuttle service will be provided for weddings and events.

Poole said any tickets that have been purchased for concerts at The Venue at The Hub will be honored. The Venue will become the Millennium Ballroom, one of seven ballrooms planned.

“All future concerts, however far out, will be honored,” he said. “We will continue to some extent into the concert business. We have a great hall for that.”

Poole said management-level employees were notified first, some of whom were offered positions in either Avalon facility, then the approximately 50 hourly workers in an all-employee meeting.

“It was a difficult decision to make because so many people were involved,” he said.

Poole will be the owner and general manager of both properties. The head chef for the current Avalon will serve as head chef for both facilities.
