BEMIDJI, Minn. - The cause of death has been determined for a 6-year-old Bemidji girl found Thursday morning.

The girl died of hypothermia due to exposure to hypothermic conditions, according to a press release issued by the Bemidji Police Department. Her body had been transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office in St. Paul where a forensic examination was performed.

The girl was a first-grade student enrolled at Horace May Elementary School. Her name has not yet been released by law enforcement, but grief counseling was available to students Friday at the school.

The Bemidji Police Department reported that on Thursday the department along with Bemidji Ambulance, Bemidji Fire and the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office responded to a weather related medical call at the Washington Avenue Apartments on Carter Circle in southeast Bemidji.

When officers and emergency medical personnel arrived they were directed to a 6-year-old female located inside the front entrance to the apartment building. She had signs of being exposed to the frigid elements and pronounced dead.

The case remains under investigation while the Bemidji Police Department detectives continue to collect information. If anyone has any information relating to the case they are asked to contact the police at (218) 333-9111.
