Ice harvesting memories wanted
The Becker County Historical Society is working to preserve the history of the ice harvests made in the county. Thousands of pounds of Becker County ice was harvested each winter to be used for residential and commercial cooling here in the county, in Fargo/Moorhead, on the Northern Pacific Railroad and to many other states.
If you have stories of cold days spent working to stock your family ice house, with a crew on Detroit Lake for the ice companies, playing in the cripple pile, packing the ice house or watching the ice being loaded onto the train that you would be willing to share; please call Carrie at the Becker County Museum at 218-847-2938. The museum is also looking for photos or ice tools used in the county to add to their existing collection.
The Historical Society hopes to share all the information gathered during a demonstration time just before the Polar Plunge on Feb. 14 and at the museum's open house on Feb. 15. Watch for more information on these and other upcoming events.
The Becker County Museum & Research Library and Gift Shop, located next to the Historic Holmes Theater on Summit Ave, Detroit Lakes are open Tuesday through Saturday; 10 a.m. to 4 a.m., Thursdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
