Inconsistency hinders DL linksters

The consistency was lacking for the Detroit Lakes boys' golf team after shooting a team score 675 in the Tri-State Golf Tournament held at the Hastings Country Club.

DL's Karter Smith was flirting with a top 10 finish after shooting a three-over par 75 Friday, but finished tied for 29th overall after carding an 84 Saturday. Rounding out the Lakers' score were Connor Hedstrom's 167 and Michael Herzog's 173.

Rick Hutchinson finished with a 176 and Ross Mickelson a 178.

"We were disappointed, I thought we could finish higher with the team we brought down there," said DL head coach Bob Gorden. "Karter had a great first day, but he had a bump in his second day."

Overall, DL's faults included some bad course management judgments, which led to several high scores on holes.

Winning the team title was Rogers with a 610, while Wayzata was second at 626.

Patrick Johnston of Orono shot a 145 for medalist honors.

But the tournament itself was a good learning experience for the younger golfers, who found out the importance of course management on an unforgiving golf course.

"This was a good stepping stone," Gorden said. "We do have a number of quality golfers, with this being our third different lineup this season after qualifying.

"It will take towards the end of the season, who our final six will be."

The Lakers will be getting junior Tanner Lane back within the next two weeks, after his recovery from a shoulder injury suffered during the DL boys' hockey team's section playoff game.

"That will help getting Lane back, because he was shooting good golf last summer," Gorden said. "Connor Hedstrom and Karter Smith also have been solid, but now we just need some more consistency throughout the lineup."

The schedule picks up, as DL will have a split squad this week, with one half going to The Preserve in Brainerd's meet Thursday and another team going north to compete in the two-day Grand Rapids meet Friday and Saturday.

One other team will also play in the Menahga meet at Blueberry Pines Friday.
