Iris J. Swenson, 83, of Moorhead, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in MeritCare Palliative Care Unit, Fargo.
Iris was born to Edward and Anne (Boettcher) Wilhelm on May 20, 1926 in Arthur, N.D. She graduated from Arthur High School and Concordia College.
Iris married A.J. "Bud" Swenson on August 27, 1950 in Fargo. She worked as a social worker for various county social services agencies including Polk, Clay, Wright and Becker counties, as well as at Pine Manor Treatment Center in Nevis, Minn.
After retirement, Iris volunteered for her church, at Hotline, and as a driver for Clay County Social Services. She served on the board of directors for PATH, was past president of the Fargo American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 2, past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star (Mecca Chapter 5), and was a member of TOPS and Al-Anon. For many years she wrote an Al-Anon article for the monthly newsletter, "The Silver Dollar" of the AA Clubhouse in Fargo.
Iris's husband, Bud, died on June 16, 1986. She is survived by a son, Joe E. (Janice) Swenson of Brooklyn Center; two sisters, Evelyn Bergdahl of San Pablo, Calif., and Marian Wagner of Tacoma, Wash.; two grandchildren, Mary (David) Malinski and Sarah (Beau) Brandner; and four great grandchildren, Alexander, Victor, Marcus and Ryder.
Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 17 at Korsmo Funeral Chapel in Moorhead.
A memorial service is set for 5 p.m. Sunday, April 18 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Moorhead, with inurnment to take place at the Vergas Village Cemetery in Vergas.
