It's Farmers Market Week
This week is National Farmers Market Week, and area markets like the Lakes Area Farmers Market is helping celebrate.
On Saturday, the 28 vendors in Peoples Park will be hosting a trivia game with a produce basket up for grabs. Answer questions about the farmers market and get your name in a drawing for a free basket filled with produce from vendors.
Then on Saturday, Aug. 18, Lakes Area Farmers Market will be hosting Customer Appreciation Day, with a special cooking demonstration by Sue Doeden. She will be cooking with herbs and honey, and other produce from vendors.
The cooking demonstration will be at 11 a.m.
During Customer Appreciation Day, the farmers market will also be holding drawings at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. for baskets of fresh produce. While the winners need not be present to win, they do need to pick up the baskets quickly since it's all perishable produce.
There will also be live music that day.
There are more than 150 farmers markets in Minnesota and more than 7,000 nationwide. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the number of farmers markets grew by 17 percent from 2010 to 2011, from 6,132 to 7,175 markets.
The Lakes Area Farmers Market is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
