Jackson to lead young contingent

There will be a learning curve to follow for the Frazee boys' track and field team during the 2011 season.

Although the Hornets do return one of the fastest sprinters and top long jumpers in the area in senior Forrest Jackson, after him, the lineup will be spread with youth and inexperience.

Jackson returns after qualifying for the Class 1A state meet in the 200-meter dash and will be a contender in the long jump, 400 and 100 dash events.

"Forrest already PR'd (personal record) in his first meet in the long jump with a 21 plus foot mark," said Frazee boys' track coach Brian Tangen. "I'm excited for him because he's healthier this year."

The Hornets will be young and inexperienced after Jackson, with several seniors out who are new to the sports and four juniors.

"We have good numbers out in seventh through sophomore and have 29 out, which is the most we've had in quite a few years," Tangen said.

The team's strength will be in the mid-distance to distance races and will be thin in the sprints.

"We'll have to find where each athlete goes in what event throughout the season," the Frazee coach said.

Sophomore Cody Nordquist will be one of the Hornets' top hurdlers, while sophomore Brett Gildersleeve will lead a contingent of throwers.

"We may not be able to fill every event, but our goal is to have everyone peaking by the end of the season," Tangen said. "We also want to put together some good relays at some point in the season."

The Hornets will open their outdoor season Friday, April 15, in Perham's Anderson-Cole Invite. They will host the Daggett Invite May 12.
