Jail, fine for forgery

A St. Cloud man was sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony check forgery charge. Willie Russell Baker Jr., 51, was given a 15-month prison sentence, stayed on conditions including completion of 120 days in jail, payment of $1,085 in court fines and fees, and his portion of $15,075 in joint restitution.

According to the original complaint, Baker and two accomplices were accused of cashing three forged payroll checks totaling more than $14,000 at a Detroit Lakes bank on Dec. 12. A subsequent investigation led to suspicion that Baker had been involved in a counterfeit check cashing scheme that had encompassed Fergus Falls, Alexandria and Moorhead. According to the complaint, Baker and his accomplices would cash the checks and give the money to an individual named “Deandre,” who would give him $200 for each cashed check.
