Jan. 13, 1934-Nov. 2, 2010
James R. Gilbert, 76, of Detroit Lakes, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2010, after a 10-year struggle with Alzheimer's.
A mass of Christian burial is set for noon Saturday, Nov. 6, in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes, with visitation for one hour prior to the service.
James Russell Gilbert was born to Charles and Violet Gilbert on January 13, 1934, in Hettinger, N.D. He was raised in New England, N.D., and then proudly served in the U.S. Navy for four years. On April 8, 1960, Jim married the love of his life, Bette Lindner. He held a degree in mechanical engineering from NDSU and was employed by the Ford Motor Company in Minneapolis for 12 years.
The family then moved to Kalispell, Mont., where Jim purchased a cabinet shop. In 1981, Jim and Bette moved to Detroit Lakes, and Jim worked at Midwest Mack as a salesman. Jim's passion ran deep for nature, music, singing, drama, tending to plants, his family and friends.
Jim's loving and kind-hearted spirit will be sorely missed by his wife Bette of 50 years; two daughters, Stacy (Todd) McGovern of Fergus Falls and Jené (Greg) Leiner of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; and one son, James D. (Jane) Gilbert of St. Paul. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren McGovern, Margot, Tessa, and Griffin Leiner; and one sister, Janet Bjorum of Yuma, Ariz.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Stanley; and one sister, Mildred Dokken.
The family will use memorials for a gift to benefit the new addition to the Minnesota Veteran's Home in Fergus Falls.
