James Gjerde, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, May 21, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 26 at Northern Lights Tabernacle in Richwood, with Pastors Harold Soyring and Robert St. Claire officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Callaway.
James was born to Simon and Borgny (Garnes) Gjerde on May 15, 1925 in Wolverton, Minn. He was a World War II veteran who proudly served his country from 1943-46 in the U.S. Army, Heavy Artillery. Basic Training was in Oklahoma. He served in France, Germany, England, Belgium and Holland.
James married Leona (Babe) Cogger September 22, 1950 in Detroit Lakes.
Surviving James are two sons, Jerry (Lisa) Gjerde of Brandon, S.D., and Alan Gjerde of Detroit Lakes; seven daughters, Lynda (Wilmer) Hultin and Loretta Gjerde, both of Callaway, Myrna Rousu, Lorraine (Duane) Lindsay, Deb Mosher and Betty Erickson, all of Detroit Lakes, and Sandy Olson of Rochert; three sisters, Irene McDowell of Renton, Wash., JoAnn (Don) Gustafson and Lorna Schons, both of Ogema; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
Preceding James in death were his wife, Leona (Babe) Gjerde (November 29, 2002); parents, Simon and Borgny Gjerde, three brothers, Richard, Robert and Williard; one sister, Sylvia Ringstad; and his beloved puppy, Mitzi.
