James M. Walz, 87, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and Parish Vigil at 7 p.m., in Holy Rosary Church, Detroit Lakes. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass on Saturday at the church.
The mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with Monsignor Timothy McGee officiating.
Interment will be in the church cemetery, with Military Rites provided by the Lake Region Veterans Honor Guard.
James Michael Walz was born to Michael and Theresa (Schoeneberger) Walz on February 19, 1924 in Perham. He was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes, having attended Holy Rosary School and Detroit Lakes High School, graduating in 1942. Following graduation, he attended NDAC in Fargo.
Jim served with the U.S. Navy, 1944-47. Following his discharge, he attended Moorhead State Teachers College in Moorhead, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1952.
Jim was united in marriage to Loretta Petersen, July 23, 1966 in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in Detroit Lakes, and Jim taught in Waubun, Lodge Grass and Columbus, Mont., and, for 26 years, at New York Mills. He retired from teaching in 1986.
In addition to teaching, Jim enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles, hunting, traveling, the Knights of Columbus, especially the 3rd Degree Initiation Team, being a Eucharistic minister and teaching the 55 Alive classes.
Survivors include his wife Loretta, of Detroit Lakes; a son, Christopher, of Detroit Lakes; two daughters, Catherine Walz of Elizabeth, Minn., and Carol Walz of New Hope, Minn.
Preceding him in death were six brothers, Charles, Ray, George, Ralph, Norbert and Edward; and a sister, Dolores.
