She was born at home in Becker County, Minnesota, on Friday, October 26, 1923. Her parents were Homer and Gladys (Schmaus) Burlingame, whose family grew to include eight brothers and four sisters. She graduated from Park Rapids High School in 1942. She took one year of "normal school" and began her teaching career in a one room school, with three pupils.

She and Paul Francis Luhman were married on January 10, 1945 and built a home in Mahnomen. Their loving union produced 11 children: Richard (Judy Tremel), Linda Horbul (Russell), Michael (Valerie Rude), Duane (Renee Erstgaard), Mark (Joan England), Mary Olsen (Bob), Diane Busse (Jim), Peter (Diane Kochmann), Pat, Carol Buresh (Joe), and Brad.

She is survived by her children; 23 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; four brothers; and three sisters.

Her husband, her parents, four brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Between her family, her gardening, her flowers, and her quilting, Grandma found time to work as the librarian at the Mahnomen Public Library for 24 years, retiring in 1998. Her love of reading, camping, fishing and making yearly trips to Canada to go house boating with her family created many happy memories and even more Tall Tales! God bless the memory of Elizabeth Jean Luhman.

Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, with a prayer service and rosary starting at 6:30 p.m., in the Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.
