Former Detroit Lakes resident Jerome T. "Jerry" Nord, 80, of Lisbon, N.D., passed away peacefully at Parkside Nursing Home in Lisbon on Sunday, March 15, 2009, with son Patrick Nord and special friend Emy Recker at his side.
Jerry, the son of Alfred Sr. and Isabel Nord, was raised on a farm and attended high school in Enderlin, N.D. He was drafted into the Army infantry and served his country during World War II. Returning home, he trained in telegraphy and worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad in the Breckenridge-Wahpeton area for 15 years. He then transferred to Valley City, N.D., to work, and attended Valley City State College, achieving a teacher's degree.
Jerry taught elementary mathematics in the Dilworth and Detroit Lakes school districts, and during this time, obtained a master's degree at Moorhead State University in Moorhead. He held positions as an elementary principal in both Appleton and Breckenridge, Minn. Retired, he drove a fuel truck for Conzemius Oil Company in Breckenridge, Minn.
Jerry was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion veterans associations. His favorite pastimes were art (ceramics, canvas and water color painting), golfing and hunting.
Surviving Jerry are his siblings, sister Mavis Hagert of Willmar, Minn., brother Kent (Mary Ann) Nord of Moorhead and sister Shirley Nord of Sartell, Minn.; five children, including sons Paul (Mary) Nord of St. Louis, Mo., Peter (Beth) Nord of Sartell and Patrick (Kathy) Nord of Harrisburg, S.D.; daughters Jane (Kevin) Templin of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Ann (Mike) Holl of Manassas, Va.; 19 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 18 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Lisbon, followed by a 5 p.m. prayer service.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 19 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Lisbon.
