Many kids will get a chance to see a variety of circus acts Monday, April 5, in the Kent Freeman Arena.

The José Cole Circus is coming to town, bringing in elephant, acrobats, clowns, magicians and maybe even some other surprise acts.

Bob Heimark is one of the planning coordinators for the event who said the circus has been coming to Detroit Lakes since 1983, and something different happens every year.

Every year, about 400 people attend the circus, and many come from surrounding counties.

This year, area businesses have purchased tickets to sell or give away at the door for children.

That way, all the kids that come through have an opportunity to see the acts, Heimark said.

Additionally, the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen purchased more than 200 tickets for Head Start children on the reservation to come see the circus.

The José Cole circus is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. A percentage of the proceeds will go to charities through the Knights of Columbus organization, Heimark said.

The José Cole Circus will start at 7 p.m., but doors will open at 6 p.m.

"José comes with a family-friendly circus that will last about one and a half hours," Heimark said.

Kids will have a chance at elephant rides in addition to watching all of the stunts, trained animals, jugglers, clowns and all the fun aspects of a circus.

"It's a fun experience," Heimark said.
