Josh Hanson dedication Aug. 30
The public is invited to an open house at Maplewood State Park on Saturday, Aug. 30, for the dedication of the new picnic shelter in honor of a fallen soldier. The Friends of Maplewood State Park raised the funds, built the shelter, and are donating it to the park as a memorial to Minnesota National Guardsman Joshua Hanson, who died in Iraq.
Hanson, the son of Maplewood State Park Manager, Bob Hanson and wife, Kathy, served with Company A, 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry, out of Detroit Lakes, MN. He was killed in action in Iraq on Aug. 30, 2006, at the age of 27.
The dedication ceremony will take place at the picnic shelter at 2 p.m. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will waive park entrance permits for the day.
