Jan. 14, 1955-Sept. 26, 2010
Joyce Ann Morrison, 55, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Joyce was born to Richard and Marie (Gaynor) Kent on January 14, 1955 in Detroit Lakes. She was raised near Waubun, graduating from Waubun High School in 1974.
Joyce was united in marriage to Larry Morrison on June 8, 1974 at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Ogema. They made their home in Moorhead until moving in 1975 to Chicago, Ill., where Larry attended Illinois College of Optometry. While living in Chicago, Joyce worked in the radiology department at Michael Reese Hospital. They also started their family in Chicago with the births of Michael and Jessica.
Joyce and Larry then moved to Thief River Falls, working at Falls Vision Clinic. Two years later in 1981, they moved to Mahnomen, where they started Morrison Eye Care. Joyce was very active in Larry's practice, whether it was doing the books or helping with their clients. Jason and Stephanie were born shortly after moving to Mahnomen.
Joyce played an active role in fundraisers for St. Michael's Catholic School, helped with 4-H and was active in the Women of Today in Mahnomen.
In 1986, they expanded Morrison Eye Care to Detroit Lakes and eventually built their home in rural Detroit Lakes in 2000. In 2004, their son Michael joined Morrison Eye Care. Joyce organized and was active in volunteer eye missions to third world countries with her husband, Larry. They went on 12 eye missions together.
Joyce was known as a master decorator, enjoyed gardening, was an excellent cook and baker, and a great hostess, especially for family Christmas gatherings at the Morrisons' residence. In her younger years she enjoyed playing softball and snowmobiling. Joyce also enjoyed bowling, scrapbooking, camping, fishing in Canada and Lake Michigan, and downhill skiing, especially when it included her children and grandchildren.
Joyce enjoyed traveling and visited many different countries with Larry. Motorcycling also became a favorite activity and several cross country motorcycle trips were made in the last several years.
