Judge rules Duluth owed $10.3 million in casino revenues

DULUTH - A federal court ruled Tuesday that the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa must pay the city of Duluth about $10.3 million.

U.S. District Court Judge Susan Nelson determined that the city was entitled to back payments it should have received under a revenue-sharing agreement involving the Fond-Du-Luth Casino.

The band ceased sharing casino funds with the city in 2009 after concluding the agreement was inconsistent with the law. Federal regulators and the courts subsequently agreed the band should no longer be compelled to share electronic slot machine profits with the city.

But Nelson determined the band should have continued those payments through 2011.
