June E. Vanderplaats

Sept. 13, 1926-Jan. 2, 2012

June Elizabeth Vanderplaats, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, age 85, of Frazee, was gently taken home to heaven on Monday, January 2, 2012 in Minneapolis, peacefully surrounded by her family.

June was born to Raymond and Gladys (Erickson) Kirkevold on September 13, 1926, in Fargo. She was one of nine children. She married Peter George Vanderplaats on April 13, 1950, and they were blessed with two daughters, Julie and Paula. They had been married 43 years when her husband passed away in 1993.

June attended school in Fargo and worked at various jobs throughout her life, starting at Quality Bakery at the young age of 16 in order to help her family financially. She went on to work at Armour & Company for many years, and retired from the Frazee Retirement Center in Frazee.

June was a reserved person but had a quick smile and a helping hand. She came from an era where hard work was expected in order to survive, and she never wavered from that way of life. She was a very responsible person who was always determined to do what had to be done, without complaining.

She was an excellent cook, loved to bake, quilt blankets, paint ceramics, go boat fishing and ice fishing, and she enjoyed traveling, visiting almost every state in the United States. She also made trips to Sea World in San Diego, California, and visited the Oregon coast many times, as she adored the ocean. She also loved the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, and made frequent trips to Las Vegas because she enjoyed the slots, and did very well!

June will be missed for her giving heart, quick sense of humor, compassionate understanding, and strong, loving support.

Preceding June in death were her husband, Peter; parents, Raymond and Gladys; and brothers, Earl, Ray Jr. and Edward.

June is survived by her two daughters, Julie (Frank) Bachman of Hamilton, Mont., and Paula (Matt) Overn of Circle Pines, Minn.; grandchildren, Jill (Steve), Luke (Brittany), Jacob (Heather), Elizabeth and Jonathan; great grandchildren, Alex, Dillen, Nevaeh, Maddisen and Hannah; sisters, Margaret, Bernice and Linda; brothers, Thomas and Kermit; with many nieces and nephews, and last but not least, she will be dearly missed by her beloved Yorkshire terriers, Andrew and Noah.

June's ashes will be laid to rest at the Pacific Ocean in Astoria, Ore., which was her wish. May God surround her with love and peace.
