June P. Hovland, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
June Phyllis Underdahl was born to Alfred and Lela (Koehler) Underdahl on June 15, 1930 in Erskine, Minn. She was raised and educated in the Erskine area, graduating from Erskine High School in 1948.
Following her graduation, June moved to Minneapolis and started working for Dayton Department Stores. On June 10, 1950, she married Ray Hovland in Maple Bay, Minn. Ray and June moved back to Detroit Lakes, where they purchased a few acres outside of town and built their home.
June worked at various places in Detroit Lakes, which included Schaefer's, Swift & Company, Pamida and Emmanuel Nursing Home. She enjoyed traveling with her family throughout the western United States and into Canada, traveling throughout the provinces.
June also loved gardening, where she was able to keep her flowers and vegetables blooming all summer long, doing crafts in her spare time along with cross stitching, needle point and zipper art.
June will be remembered and missed by her husband of 59 years, Ray Hovland of Detroit Lakes; two sons; Leslie (JoAnn) Hovland of Minnetonka, Minn., and Eric Hovland of Big Lake, Minn. She is also survived by one sister, Arlys Lee of Mahnomen; one grandson and one niece.
Preceding June in death were her parents; one sister, Eileen Josselyn; infant son, Scott James; and infant daughter, Joan Marie.
A celebration of June's life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 at First Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes. A gathering of friends and family will take place at the church one hour prior to services. The David-Donehower Funeral Home has been serving the family.
